Auntie Jackie's Annual Birthday Campaign
My mom, Katie, was a wizard with fabric! She used to make most of my clothes when I was very young, and even though I started wearing store-bought stuff when I went off to school, she never stopped sewing. She'd make these amazing clothes for herself and the most epic Halloween costumes. One of my faves was the Tweety Bird costume she whipped up for me in 4th grade. Still trying to find a pic - this was before cell phones, so it's like a treasure hunt!
My mom has since passed. So, in memory of her love for sewing, I’m dedicating my birthday month, September, to honor her legacy by raising funds for Shule's Mavazi Fashion Institute. This program will teach street boys in Uganda how to sew and create a future they can be proud of.
So here’s the deal—throughout September, I’m asking you to help me give the gift of education and opportunity to boys who need it the most in memory of my mom, Katie.
I aim to raise $15,000 to purchase 6 sewing machines and enroll 10 boys for Shule's inaugural class at the Mavazi Fashion Institute, which starts in January 2025.
This isn’t just about teaching boys to sew—it’s about stitching together a brighter future for them.
